Frequently Asked Questions
What is a UU Voices Power Lobbyist?
A UU Voices Power Lobbyist is someone who is willing to contact his/her/their legislator on short notice to provide feedback on bills as they come up for review. The Legislature schedules hearings with very little notice (sometimes just a day in advance), so your willingness to commit to respond rapidly gives us strength in numbers and an even more powerful voice at the State Capitol.
As a Power Lobbyist, which issues will I focus on?
We have a variety of issues prioritized for this year and we work in tandem with a broad network of state partners to achieve them. The issues fall into five categories.
- Environmental Justice
- Economic Justice
- Reforming the Criminal Justice System
- Deepening Democracy
- Preserving Health & Dignity
You can read more about our legislative priorities here: http://www.uuvoiceswa.org/2017_legislative_agenda
What if I do not want to lobby for all the issues?
It is up to you to choose whether to respond to a particular action alert, although we hope you will consider taking action each and every time. We are stronger standing together and an injustice to some of us constitutes a threat to us all.
How were the issues chosen?
At our annual meeting this past November, Washington State UU Voices for Justice members weighed a set of policy priorities with the following criteria in mind: 1) reflection of UU values; 2) likelihood of gaining traction in the state legislature; and 3) high moral urgency.
What do I have to do to become a Power Lobbyist?
Simply let us know you’d like to be one! Send an email to our coordinator, Andie Long and she’ll sign you up. firstname.lastname@example.org
How does it work?
You will receive email alerts from us with information on bills coming up for review. Alerts will also include the deadline to respond, and suggested talking points – though we encourage you to make a connection with your legislators that is both personal and heartfelt. Citizen advocacy is most effective when you let your representatives know why you care about a particular issue, and what it means to you and your community.
If you would prefer to receive text message alerts instead of email, please let us know.
