Washington UU Voices for Justice:
Legislative Proposal for 2007

Economic Justice/Poverty

Proposed by: Jerome Chroman(UUC/ UUJEC NW Steering Comm)

Propose and Track the Issue Economic Justice/Poverty Per the Criteria

  • Timeliness:
    • Poverty has been on the increase in Washington for the past several years as has food insecurity and hunger.
    • Housing costs have been rising while wages have fallen, affecting low-wage workers the most.
  • Potential for impact:
    • Living wage movements are on the increase across the country and a Washington state legislator who has been working on this issue may introduce living wage legislation in the 2007 session.
  • Reforming predatory lending practices was attempted in this year’s session unsuccessfully but will be back in next year’s session.
  • Connection to UU Values:
Access to the basic necessities of life, i.e. Food, shelter, healthcare, is a matter of justice and a human right for all people.
  • Strength of Coalition Partnerships:
The UU community has developed strong relationships with Statewide Poverty Action Network and Washington Assoc. of Churches, two of the leading organizations in the state dealing with issues of economic justice and poverty.
