Great things have been happening with WAmend in the last few weeks. I-735 petitions are being signed at a rapid rate, and as of May 18th, volunteers have collected 17,580 signatures, with over 378 full petitions sheets just this week! From Vancouver to Bellingham, Port Townsend to Spokane, Seattle to Olympia, people are working hard and having fun getting everyone to sign I-735!
Check out the I-735 website! It was created to make volunteering easy and includes volunteer materials, pick-up and drop-off locations, and a list of upcoming events where you can join other volunteers in your area to collect signatures.
Area co-captains are in place in King County and throughout the State, so follow the links to find an organizer near you. If there is not yet a captain in your area, please email Nimco Bulale firstname.lastname@example.org and she will send petitions to you!
Signature Gathering Opportunities this Weekend
WAmend is hoping to get as many people possible to collect signatures over the Memorial Day weekend, especially at the NWFolk Life Festival in the Seattle Center. Last year, WAmend collected over 10,000 signatures at this event, so please click here to sign up for a shift.
In addition to Folklife, there are many other events happening this weekend to throughout the state. To find an event in your area, either for a special event, like NW Folklife, but for ongoing events such farmers markets, please visit our new Events page to search for signature gathering opportunities in your area.
[NOTE: in a previous update they acknowledged the endorsement of UU Voices for Justice.] As you may know, WAmend’s I-735 efforts have received some great endorsements from organizations like the Washington Education Association and IBEW local 46 & local 77. If you are a member of a union, please contact Diane Jones at email@example.com or 360-379-9193if you can help with the process of getting your local’s endorsement.
If you are connected with your local teachers’ union, please contact Jonathan Tong at 425-489-0354 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Many teachers are getting involved, and we’d like to connect with as many local education associations as possible. Teachers see the importance of getting big money out of elections!
Please donate to the Campaign!
This is a people-driven campaign. So far, 391 people have made donations to I-735, from $5 to $5,000, with the average gift being $58. Please keep this campaign strong and the momentum going and take a minute to give to the campaign now. Your donation will help assure that WAmend has the resources needed to sustain us through the end and get I-735 on the November 2016 ballot.
Folks from around the country will soon know Washington State believes corporations are not people, money is not speech, and all political donations should be regulated and made public.
Thank you for all you do to strengthen our democracy! Your financial gifts, signature gathering and volunteer time makes you part of the democracy movement to get big money out of elections!
